This event was both exciting and sobering.

It was exciting because in my humble opinion there were at least 500,000 people there from all parts of the nation, from all walks of life, and from every age group imaginable. I was so impressed by the many young people I spoke with, many of whom had driven hundreds of miles all through the night to reach the march just as it started. Adding to the excitement were the great speakers. It was, of course, very thrilling to hear the eloquent words of Jesse Jackson, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Jane Fonda, and Tim Robbins. But, it was just as inspirational, if not more so, to hear speakers representing Gold Star Families--families who have lost loved ones fighting in Irag and Afghanistan--organized labor, NOW and many other frontline Progressive organizations. Of all the words we heard, the one's that had the most effect on me were Tim Robbins' when he said that:

"Richard Nixon talked to walls, but George Bush is talking to God. The God Bush is talking to is not a God I recognize. This God seems to be giving Bush a pass on many of the Ten Commandments. Among the Commandments he is getting a pass on are 'Thou shalt not bear false witness' [here Robbins recited a long list of Bush lies and exaggerations], 'honor thy father' [here Robbins noted that Bush I had given Bush II advice not to go to Iraq], and, most importantly, 'THOU SHALT NOT KILL!'" He closed his speech by asking why so many of the Democrats who campaigned against these transgressions now are saying that impeachment is off the table.

The march was sobering because everything you could see and hear in Washington, at the March, from knowledgeable people who live there, from the Conservative Summit that was being held in our hotel, is that Bush has no intention on honoring the election demands given him by Voters last November 7. This is all the more sobering when you hear speech after speech from people on the front line of this war detailing how poorly it has gone, how many of our civil rights have been taken away, and how much criminal behavior (torture) has been done in the name of our security. As one speaker, whose name I cannot remember, shouted to the crowd: We are all responsible for allowing these horrible things to happen, for until very recently there has not been any significant mass protest demanding that these horrors committed in our name be stopped and redressed.

As just one example, the morning of the March, the Washington Post reported that the young arab-Canadian that we kidnapped and sent incognito to Syria to be interrogated by torture has received an apology and $9 million dollars in recompense from Canada for its role in cooperating with the United States to send this young man away. The Prime Minister of Canada demanded that the United States apologize and restore this young man's right to travel through and within our borders. In reply, the Bush Administration made it clear that it had no intention of apologizing to this victim and stated that he would remain on our Terrorist watch lists, including our No Fly List.

Along the same lines, we heard from Jesselyn Radack, who was an attorney in the Justice Department's Professional Responsibility Advisory Office during the John Walker Lindh case. She raised legal and ethical objections over the questioning of Lindh without his lawyer and revealed misconduct by Department of Justice officials. As a result, Radack was pushed out of her job at the Justice Department, fired from her next job, put under criminal investigation and put on the no-fly list (where she remains as of Saturday).

Most sobering to me, however, was the shameful fact that only a handful of Democrats in public office accepted invitations to speak at this March. Among those running for President, only Dennis Kucinich showed up. No Democrats in the Senate appeared. Only a handful of Democrats in the House appeared, including John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Lynne Woolsey, and Jerry Nadler. Perhaps the best speech by a Democrat in public office came from Salt Lake City mayor "Rocky" Anderson. If a politician from a red state such as Utah has the courage to come to this peace March, it speaks volumes about those who would presume to head our ticket in 2008 that only Congressman Kucinich would be seen at this event.

My disappointment in our putative leaders will not, however, eclipse my pride and my joy in our fellow American citizens who came to the March and were with us in spirit. As I was leaving my room this morning, a door to another room opened and a young woman and her two very small children appeared. The woman bent down and picked up the copy of the Sunday Washington Post that was provided each guest. She glanced at the front page and then started calling to her husband: "My God, Michael, they put it on the front page. This is so important. She hugged her children. I asked "were you at the March." Her reply: "Yes, and I could never have believed that a middle of the road soccer mom like me would have ever done such a thing. I was so impressed with how respectful everyone was and how the overwhelming majority are just everyday citizens like me trying to get by. I expected to be in a band of wild radicals."

Hearing this young soccer mom makes me believe the tide is turning if we all just kick it up a notch. Impeachment should not be off the table. We should not resign ourselves to Bush having his way with our young military men and women for two more years. We should do all we can to see that he does not get a chance to get us in another war, this time in Iran.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I truly believe our time is at hand if we will only seize the moments now given to us to make a difference.

Your friend in the War for Peace

Gary

PS:

Best sign I saw not related to the War:

No Child Left Behind with a Dime.

Peace House Tulsa

Sent by a Muslim friend of Peace House

Why Can’t Americans See it?
By Paul Craig Roberts
“Within weeks from now, we will see the informational warfare machine start
working. The public opinion is already under pressure. There will be a
growing anti-Iranian militaristic hysteria, new information leaks,
disinformation, etc. . . . The probability of a US aggression against Iran
is extremely high"
01/27/07 "ICHBlog <http://www.ichblog.eu>" -- - The American public and the
US Congress are getting their backs up about the Bush Regime’s determination
to escalate the war in Iraq. A Massive protest demonstration is occurring in
Washington DC today, and Congress is expressing its disagreement with Bush’s
decision to intensify the war in Iraq.

This is all to the good. However, it misses the real issue--the Bush Regime’
s looming attack on Iran.

Rather than winding down one war, Bush is starting another. The entire world
knows this and is discussing Bush’s planned attack on Iran in many forums.
It is only Americans who haven’t caught on. A few senators have said that
Bush must not attack Iran without the approval of Congress, and postings on
the Internet demonstrate world wide awareness that Iran is in the Bush
Regime’s cross hairs. But Congress and the Media--and the demonstration in
Washington--are focused on Iraq.

What can be done to bring American awareness up to the standard of the rest
of the world?

In Davos, Switzerland, the meeting of the World Economic Forum, a conference
where economic globalism issues are discussed, opened January 24 with a
discussion of Bush’s planned attack on Iran. The Secretary General of the
League of Arab States and bankers and businessmen from such US allies as
Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates all warned of the coming attack and its
catastrophic consequences for the MIddle East and the world.

Writing for Global Research (January 24), General Leonid Ivashov, vice
president of the Academy on Geopolitical Affairs and former Joint Chief of
Staff of the Russian Armies, forecast an American nuclear attack on Iran by
the end of April. General Ivashov presented the neoconservative reasoning
that is the basis for the attack and concluded that the world’s protests
cannot stop the US attack on Iran.

There will be shock and indignation, General Ivashov concludes, but the US
will get away with it. He writes:

“Within weeks from now, we will see the informational warfare machine start
working. The public opinion is already under pressure. There will be a
growing anti-Iranian militaristic hysteria, new information leaks,
disinformation, etc. . . . The probability of a US aggression against Iran
is extremely high. It does remain unclear, though, whether the US Congress
is going to authorize the war. It may take a provocation to eliminate this
obstacle (an attack on Israel or the US targets including military bases).
The scale of the provocation may be comparable to the 9-11 attack in NY.
Then the Congress will certainly say “Yes” to the US President.”

The Bush Regime has made it clear that it is convinced that Bush already has
the authority to attack Iran. The Regime argues that the authority is part
of Bush’s commander-in-chief powers. Congress has authorized the war in
Iraq, and Bush’s recent public statements have shifted the responsibility
for the Iraqi insurgency from al-Qaeda to Iran. Iran, Bush has declared, is
killing US troops in Iraq. Thus, Iran is covered under the authorization for
the war in Iraq.

Both Bush and Cheney have made it clear in public statements that they will
ignore any congressional opposition to their war plans. For example, CBS
News reported (Jan. 25) that Cheney said that a congressional resolution
against escalating the war in Iraq “won’t stop us.” According to the
Associated Press and Yahoo News, Bush dismissed congressional disapproval
with his statement, “I’m the decision-maker.”

Everything is in place for an attack on Iran. Two aircraft carrier attack
forces are deployed to the Persian Gulf, US attack aircraft have been moved
to Turkey and other countries on Iran’s borders, Patriot anti-missile
defense systems are being moved to the Middle East to protect oil facilities
and US bases from retaliation from Iranian missiles, and growing reams of
disinformation alleging Iran’s responsibility for the insurgency in Iraq are
being fed to the gullible US Media.

General Ivashof and everyone in the Middle East and at the Davos
globalization conference in Europe understands the Bush Regime’s agenda.

Why cannot Americans understand?

Why hasn’t Congress told Bush and Cheney that they will both be instantly
impeached if they initiate a wider war?

"The people whom Allah loves most are those who are always ready to help
others in any way they can..."

Peace House Tulsa

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/deminva/012707Protest/DSCF0228.jpg
Here's a picture of Harry Allison at the demonstration in DC this past weekend.

RALLY SATURDAY AT CAPITOL

Peace House - Tulsa
306 S. I will make every effort to delete very judiciously and only when truly necessary.
May I remind all readers of the Peace House-Tulsa blog that this blog exists for communication to and among SUPPORTERS of the aims of Peace House. Those wishing to hold discussions on other topics can find many other places to have those discussions.
There is so much work to be done to bring about justice. We have no time for distractions from the necessary and important work before us.
Please be reminded that all posts to this blog need to be signed with a real name within the text if your screen name doesn't reveal that information.
THANK YOU,
Rev. A REALLY BIG thank you to Terry Aziere for being the recruiter, booking agent, tech person and MC! WOW!
I think Cater 2 U sold every morsel of food they brought: red beans & rice, jambalaya, veggie pasta, hot dogs with all the fixins. AND they supplied a Jupiter Jump to keep the little ones happy. We are so happy to support young entrepeneurs who care about justice. Next time you need entertainment and authentic Louisiana food, book Stefanie and Lavelle Cole. (I'll post their number at a later date--after getting permission).
Thanks to the door prize donors (mostly recruited by the incomparable Nancy Moran): Dwelling Spaces for a donated framed print and Veterans for Peace for the movie poster of Sir, No Sir and the cuban art gallery's Che Guevara poster, and three beautiful Japanese calligraphies of "peace" by Nancy's exchange student and a Camp Casey T-shirt donated by Diane Bostic and the sweet little handmade gift baskets from Janet Hutto's collection of crafts made by her late mother. And gosh, who donated that "I 'heart' Tulsa" T-shirt?
Poets Mary McAnally and Deborah Hunter kept the crowd spellbound and inspired. And there was a surprise appearance by Bill Zischang who shared a 3-page poem he wrote for the occasion: "How to End War Forever (in one sentence)" (I hope to post that later too.)
The music was awesome! Deborah Hord, Susan Herndon, Brian Parton, Mothers Brothers & Others, Lon Bartlett, Tiphany, Mike C., Terry Aziere, JT Gentry, Jonas Adrian, Timbre Wolf and oh no I'm forgetting names!!! Non-stop music from 1:00 to 8:00---our own little Woodstock of wonderfulness.
Several neighbors stopped by, their curiosity finally satisfied as they got a chance to check us out. And the Tulsa PD cruised by slowly more than once. Fox 23 showed up, but I don't think we got any airtime. Channel 6 came and filmed but had too many pro-military stories to air--including a truly nonsensical one about an OK quartermaster company (#172) retiring their flag and adopting a new number (#165?) with lots of shots of men in fatigues. And there was another OK funeral for yet another dead soldier--airtime none of us would be-grudge as we who love peace mourn along with the families of the dead. Peace-making just isn't as important as a military unit getting a new flag to carry into battle--or maybe it was something I said. Perhaps we need a different spokesperson. (NOTE: KOTV-6 did air a short piece about PH opening late on Sunday and early on Monday.) Urban Tulsa reporter Holly interviewed some of us earlier in the week and sent a photographer to snap some pictures of two of the old lady founders---Jeremy trying really hard to make us look not quite as frumpy as we really are in real life---we'll see how it all turns out.
AND we rescued a small poodle which had escaped from his human companion's truck early in the afternoon---all in a day in the life of peace-makers.
Whew! Now the real work commences: building the culture of peace.
Those of you who signed up for classes, activities actions, etc. will be hearing from us soon!

Press release

Tulsa, September 10, 2006: The public is invited to the Grand Opening Celebration of Peace House - Tulsa from 1-8 p.m. Saturday September 23, 2006.
Peace House is Tulsa’s newest organization devoted to supporting peace and justice. I hope you'll consider signing it also.
peace,
Valerie

Dear Supporter of Peace and Diplomacy,

The most recent news at this writing is that the Israeli Security Cabinet has approved a "widening of the ground offensive" and that Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon would resume "in full force" after the expiration of the partial suspension that followed the massacre in Qana.

As you know, under international law the UN Security Council is supposed to act to stop crimes against peace, but cannot do so in this case because it is paralyzed by the veto of the Bush Administration, which opposes an immediate cease-fire and is backed in this position by the United Kingdom. However, under Resolution 377, "Uniting for Peace," the UN General Assembly can act when the Security Council fails to do so (see "A Road to Peace in Lebanon?" Jeremy Brecher and Brendan Smith, July 27, 2006, http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0727-27.htm.) This procedure has been used 10 times in the history of the UN, often at the initiative of the United States.

Please join us, therefore, in circulating the following petition, calling for the UN General Assembly to act to bring about an immediate cease-fire in Lebanon, Israel, and Gaza. Even a significant movement towards the convening of the General Assembly to consider an immediate, unconditional cease-fire will put significant pressure on the major powers to support an immediate cease-fire.

To: United Nations General Assembly
Cc: Non-Aligned Movement

http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/justforeignpolicy.org/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=326

Tulsa Islamic Society Request

Sandra Rana from the Islamic Society called to request Peace House supporters' participation in a PEACEFUL rally.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 4
5 - 6 pmNorthwest corner of 71st and MEMORIAL
Positive peaceful messages and behavior only. The point of this exhibit is that the nature of politics and
war does not change. When we forget the lessons of history we will repeat
the same mistakes over and over. Some observations seem to stand the test
of time such as Socrates’ quotation from 399 B.C. that, “All wars are fought
for money” or Jim Morrison’s assertion in 1969 that, “Whoever controls the
Media, controls the mind”. History is rich with practical lessons that apply
today. The challenge with this exhibit is to express a thought visually
without simply spray painting it on a wall.

The photographs in this exhibit are made with a Leica rangefinder camera and
a normal lens. I use black and white negative film; the images are printed
on silver gelatin archival rag paper. I did not use Photoshop or darkroom
tricks. What you see in the print is what was there. I made the signs, put
them in place and photographed them. The signs may not have been up for a
long time but they were in plain view.

Earth Beneath, by Derek Stoops of Kansas City, Mo., is a seven channel video
installation that explores the presumable segregated relationship between
media, religion and the viewer. Footage from the artist’s local news and
televangelists programming are used in a rapid montage style to create an
oppressive glossolalic audio immersion while the partially obscured visual
content of the seven monitors all facing the ground tempts the viewer to
kneel down so as to gain access to the corresponding visual content.

Living ArtSpace is located at 308 S. Kenosha Ave. Tulsa, Ok.
Check out the website for images: www.livingarts.org
These exhibits continue through Thursday, August 24.
Gallery Hours: Saturdays 1-4pm, Thursdays 5-8pm
or by appointment - Film begins at 7:30.

The Carrie Dickerson Foundation and CASE, Citizens for Alternative and Safe Energy, are inviting you to a FREE showing of "A Question of Power" at the Circle Cinema, 12 South Lewis, Tulsa (Near Admiral and Lewis). "Community Consciousness Through Film".
The film is a documentary about the opposition to the building of nuclear plants in California. We will be previewing Carrie's new book, "Harvesting the Wind - Fourteen Centuries of Wind Power" with an uncorrected proof copy.
We will be taking orders for the book and will be showing some of the original art work by local artist, Gwen Ingram, from Drumright.
We will also be speaking briefly about how Carrie's fight to stop Black Fox here in Oklahoma differed greatly from the opposition in the film. Her fight was the only successful legal intervention that stopped a nuclear plant from being built and the only way to stop PSO at that point in time.
Please join us for an evening of information and promoting renewable energy, as we realize the new rumblings to return to building nuclear plants must be stopped before they begin.

Many of you have heard that Carrie had a recent fall and short hospital visit, but she is now resettled in the new nursing home in Claremore. She is doing well. The best medicine we can give her is to rally and carry on her work so that she can relax in confidence, knowing that we will not let her life's dedication be forgotten. We will continue to inform the public and crusade for safe and alternative energy. Please join us in our efforts to keep our environment safe.

We very much appreciate the Circle's support of our efforts. We encourage you to patronize the concession stand while attending our event.

Donations to The Carrie Dickerson Foundation will be gratefully and graciously accepted. Some members have been fasting off and on since July 4th. Others mindfully intending to fast by spiritually connecting to and supporting those from all over the country who are fasting until U.S. troops are out of Iraq and back home, where they belong.

Aug. 6th marks the 61st anniversary of the shame on this nation: the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, followed by the bombing of Nagasaki. This seems to be an appropriate day to FAST in solidarity with Codepink.

Remaining silent in quiet vigils for peace continue, yet we seek to manifest into the physical that which our group has known all along: violence directed outward is also violence directed inward. We FAST for an end to the violence. We FAST for sustainable choices. First and foremost the Tulsa Engage Circle FASTS to echo the call for Troops Home FAST!

Any and all are welcome to join the FAST for as long as you're able.
We are asking that pastors and other religious leaders join us.
We are asking that all elected officials join us.

Notes of support can be directed to the Codepink Blog where we'll record the names of those who wish to have their names listed.

Peace Through Justice.
Engage Circle of Tulsa

Action item: DU use in Lebanon

From Tulsa's Depleted Uranium (DU) activist B.G.:

Depleted Uranium Situation Worsens Requiring Immediate Action
By President Bush, Prime Minister Blair, and Prime Minister Olmert
Dr. Doug Rokke, PhD.
former Director, U.S. Army Depleted Uranium project
July 26, 2006

The delivery of at least 100 GBU 28 bunker busters bombs containing depleted uranium warheads by the United States to Israel for use against targets in Lebanon will result in additional radioactive and chemical toxic contamination with consequent adverse health and environmental effects throughout the middle east. Israeli tank gunners are also using depleted uranium tank rounds as photographs verify.

Today, U.S., British, and now Israeli military personnel are using illegal uranium munitions- America's and England's own "dirty bombs" while U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense, and British Ministry of Defence officials deny that there are any adverse health and environmental effects as a consequence of the manufacture, testing, and/or use of uranium munitions to avoid liability for the willful and illegal dispersal of a radioactive toxic material - depleted uranium.

The use of uranium weapons is absolutely unacceptable, and a crime against humanity. Consequently the citizens of the world and all governments must force cessation of uranium weapons use. I must demand that Israel now provide medical care to all DU casualties in Lebanon and clean up all DU contamination.

U.S. and British officials have arrogantly refused to comply with their own regulations, orders, and directives that require United States Department of Defense officials to provide prompt and effective medical care to "all" exposed individuals. Reference: Medical Management of Unusual Depleted Uranium Casualties, DOD, Pentagon, 10/14/93, Medical Management of Army personnel Exposed to Depleted Uranium (DU) Headquarters, U.S. Army Medical Command 29 April 2004, and section 2-5 of U.S. Army Regulation 700-48. Israeli officials must not do so now.

They also refuse to clean up dispersed radioactive Contamination as required by Army Regulation- AR 700-48: "Management of Equipment Contaminated With Depleted Uranium or Radioactive Commodities" (Headquarters, Department Of The Army, Washington, D.C., September 2002) and U.S. Army Technical Bulletin- TB 9-1300-278: "Guidelines For Safe Response To Handling, Storage, And Transportation Accidents Involving Army Tank Munitions Or Armor Which Contain Depleted Uranium" (Headquarters, Department Of The Army, Washington, D.C., JULY 1996). Specifically section 2-4 of United States Army Regulation-AR 700-48 dated September 16, 2002 requires that:
(1) "Military personnel "identify, segregate, isolate, secure, and label all RCE" (radiologically contaminated equipment).
(2) "Procedures to minimize the spread of radioactivity will be implemented as soon as possible."
(3) "Radioactive material and waste will not be locally disposed of through burial, submersion, incineration, destruction in place, or abandonment" and
(4) "All equipment, to include captured or combat RCE, will be surveyed, packaged, retrograded, decontaminated and released IAW Technical Bulletin 9-1300-278, DA PAM 700-48" (Note: Maximum exposure limits are specified in Appendix F).

The previous and current use of uranium weapons, the release of radioactive components in destroyed U.S. and foreign military equipment, and releases of industrial, medical, research facility radioactive materials have resulted in unacceptable exposures. Therefore, decontamination must be completed as required by U.S. Army Regulation 700-48 and should include releases of all radioactive materials resulting from military operations.

The extent of adverse health and environmental effects of uranium weapons contamination is not limited to combat zones but includes facilities and sites where uranium weapons were manufactured or tested including Vieques; Puerto Rico; Colonie, New York; Concord, MA; Jefferson Proving Grounds, Indiana; and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Therefore medical care must be provided by the United States Department of Defense officials to all individuals affected by the manufacturing, testing, and/or use of uranium munitions. Thorough environmental remediation also must be completed without further delay.

I am amazed that fifteen years after was I asked to clean up the initial DU mess from Gulf War 1 and over ten years since I finished the depleted uranium project that United States Department of Defense officials and others still attempt to justify uranium munitions use while ignoring mandatory requirements. I am dismayed that Department of Defense and Department of Energy officials and representatives continue personal attacks aimed to silence or discredit those of us who are demanding that medical care be provided to all DU casualties and that environmental remediation is completed in compliance with U.S. Army Regulation 700-48. But beyond the ignored mandatory actions the willful dispersal of tons of solid radioactive and chemically toxic waste in the form of uranium munitions is illegal (http://www.traprockpeace.org/karen_parker_du_illegality.pdf) and just does not even pass the common sense test and according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, DHS, is a dirty bomb. DHS issued "dirty bomb" response guidelines, http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/fr-cont.html
, on January 3, 2006 for incidents within the United States but ignore DOD use of uranium weapons and existing DOD regulations. These guidelines specifically state that: "Characteristics of RDD and IND Incidents: A radiological incident is defined as an event or series of events, deliberate or accidental, leading to the release, or potential release, into the environment of radioactive material in sufficient quantity to warrant consideration of protective actions. Use of an RDD or IND is an act of terror that produces a radiological incident." Thus the use of uranium munitions is "an act or terror" as defined by DHS. Finally continued compliance with the infamous March 1991 Los Alamos Memorandum that was issued to ensure continued use of uranium munitions can not be justified.

In conclusion: the President of the United States- George W. Bush, the Prime Minister of Great Britain-Tony Blair, and the Prime Minister of Israel Olmert must acknowledge and accept responsibility for willful use of illegal uranium munitions- their own "dirty bombs"- resulting in adverse health and environmental effects.

President Bush, Prime Minister Blair, and Prime Minister Olmert should order:
1. medical care for all casualties,
2. thorough environmental remediation,
3. immediate cessation of retaliation against all of us who demand compliance with medical care and environmental remediation requirements,
4. and stop the already illegal the use (UN finding) of depleted uranium munitions.
References- these references are copies the actual regulations and orders and other pertinent official documents:
http://www.traprockpeace.org/twomemos.html
http://www.traprockpeace.org/rokke_du_3_ques.html
http://www.traprockpeace.org/du_dtic_wakayama_Aug2002.html
http://www.traprockpeace.org/karen_parker_du_illegality.pdf
http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/fr-cont.html
http://cryptome.org/dhs010306.txt

Image 71440735 http://editorial.gettyimages.com

NETWORK OF SPIRITUAL PROGRESSIVES

Rabbi Michael Lerner, organizer of the Network (NSP) has asked for concerned citizens to join in signing a letter calling for the end of violence in the Middle East. Hodge Podge Collective and Bookstore have donated a large bookcase and LOTS of books on peace and social justice themes to Peace House. Soon we'll need help to place cards and pockets inside for tracking them (like old-fashioned libraries!) Janet H. has already donated the index cards and pockets which need to be glued in place. Chelsea C. says that members of Hodge Podge will come by a few weeks from now to sort the books into appropriate categories.

Other needs:
=> the right kind of glue (any librarians wish to advise us on that?)
=> a recipe or small file box in which to keep the cards of books that are checked out.
=> helpers to enter titles into a database
=> A PEACE HOUSE LIBRARIAN TO KEEP IT ALL RUNNING SMOOTHLY!!

You might want to donate books from your personal collection so that they may circulate among the community of peace-makers. At this time, we want to limit donated books to those titles that are really excellent and which the donor can highly recommend. Of course we also want to stick to the themes of peace, social justice and spiritual or secular topics which support our engagement with nonviolence. Tempting (and necessary unfortunately) as it is to be overtly electorally partisan in these times, it is important for Peace House to focus on hopeful positive aspects of change-making. Why?
Rev. Valerie Mapstone Ackerman, Janet Hutto, Rev. Mary McAnally and other people who were among the seed planters of Tulsa Peace Fellowship following the attacks on September 11, 2001 saw that there was a need for a local institutional presence for peace-making and that Tulsa-area peacemakers needed a place to call home. We envisioned a place where women, children and men could come together to teach and learn new ways of interacting, new ways of solving problems, new ways of changing the world. Peace House can be an incubator for the change we want to be and see in the world.

What exactly will Tulsa Peace House do?
While Valerie, Janet and Mary have our own ideas, we know that there are many, many ideas percolating among the wider communities of peaceful people. The Peace House building can host a wide range of activities: classes, discussion groups, meditation, music-making, social gatherings, retreats, etc. While some activities may be limited by the size and amenities of this building, our imaginations need not be limited!

Is Tulsa Peace House the same as Tulsa Peace Fellowship?
No, but we’re on the same path, just taking different perspectives. Tulsa Peace Fellowship has a separate organizational and financial structure from Tulsa Peace House. The two organizations continue to be mutually supportive and cooperative.

How is Tulsa Peace House funded?
Donations of time, talent, goods, services, and of course, money sustain Peace House. Right now all of the money to pay rent and utilities and to purchase supplies comes from voluntary contributions by individuals or groups. Optimally at this stage we hope to solicit modest (or embarrassingly large) monthly pledges from supporters to cover basic costs and then do other fundraising to cover special projects. Perhaps in the future we’ll write grant proposals to fund special projects or hire staff.

Is TPH a not-for-profit organization? Are contributions tax-deductible?
We do have non-profit status according to IRS regulations thanks to Rev. Mary McAnally’s Open Door Arts Coalition. Since we do not plan to engage in any electioneering activity we fall under 501c3 rules and so all contributions are deductible if one files the “long form” on tax day.

Where do I send donations?
Checks made to “Peace House” may be sent to 306 S. Phoenix, Tulsa, OK 74127. We’re not ready to accept the expenses related to credit card donating. Perhaps our future website will accept PayPal transactions, but we’re not there yet!

Who is in charge and whom do I call with questions or offers to help?
Janet, Mary and Valerie handle the “business” of Peace House. Valerie is the “keeper of the key” for now and is acting as Director. Until PH has its own phone you may call Valerie on her cell phone or email her at vack18@valornet.com
We expect to broaden the leadership circle as soon as committed volunteers emerge. How about YOU?

Can Tulsa really sustain such an organization?
Well, if Crawford, TX, OKC, OK and Fayetteville, AR can, we can!! When you can buy several versions of peace sign jewelry at the Kohl’s store and the banks provide peace sign logos for checks, you know something interesting is bubbling up.

Why did you choose this place and this neighborhood?
We were very fortunate to find a fairly inexpensive building belonging to a supportive owner---after much searching with the help of professional realtors. (thanks Gayle and Barbara!) Since the whole world could benefit from neighborhood Peace Houses, we can foresee fine possibilities for community interaction. Who knows? There may be multiple locations in sustainably-built off-the-grid buildings for Peace House some day.

Where should I park when I visit?
In addition to on-street parking along Phoenix, there is a grassy lot on the east side of the street across and down a little from PH where PH visitors may park. PLEASE do not park on the grassy area just beside the building--the future home of a peace garden.

What do you envision for the near future of Peace House?
• Happy Hours: come and show your joyful side from 5 – 7 every Wednesday. Meet other Peace House supporters and share the excitement.
• We need a sign and will likely purchase a professionally made banner for now.
• A couple of volunteers are beginning to work on a website but if a “pro” wanted to tackle that task, that’d be great.
• All Souls Unitarian Church youth group will do some volunteer work for us in July.
• We’re gathering a lending library of peace and social justice-related books and hope to sell some too.
• A community garden could be planned for the lot to the north—some foundational work could commence immediately (soil amendment etc,) if the right volunteers emerge.
• We’re planning to host workshops employing the “Engage” curriculum produced by Pace e Bene for studying personal nonviolence.
• There will be a workshop on Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication © soon.
• A Grand Opening celebration is tentatively slated for Saturday, September 17!
• Meditation opportunities (for cultivating inner peace) will commence no later than August. There may be several different styles and schedules from which to choose.
• The Crosby Hills Neighborhood Association meets here regularly.

7/11/06

7/11/06 Peace House Tulsa update

Things are rolling along.
We have had two successful Happy Hour events at Peace House.
Please join us any Wednesday from 5 - 7 to meet others who want to create a peaceful world sooner rather than later!

More and more people are hearing about PH and want to be involved!

We have an offer of herbs and other plants if someone would like to plant them, care for them, weed the beds, oversee harvesting etc. on the property next to Peace House---OR the donor would donate them to us and we can sell them as a fundraiser!!
